This book is nonfiction so my review will have spoilers. For the casual reader with a taste for the period—especially a somewhat morbid taste—the book should be welcome. Lindsey Fitzharris discusses the major changes that have taken place to transform surgery from a gruesome, deadly act to the more humane, effective procedure we are accustomed to seeing today. Except for the feuds between himself and other established surgeons, many of whom refused to even try his unfamiliar techniques, the story of Joseph Lister’s personal life wasn’t terribly interesting.

It was so interesting to see how things we take for granted in the modern world would have seemed so crazy or ridiculous to surgeons in the 19th century. What prevents The Butchering Art from being an exceptional account of either Lister or the development of antiseptic and preventative medicine is this very slickness and accessibility.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Learned a lot about the horrors of surgery in the early 19th century and how Lister put surgery on the path to the painless wonders performed today.

The creator of popular websites and a Youtube series about medical and surgical subjects, Fitzharris is clearly at home with such material, and weaves shudder-inducing factoids and interesting digressions freely throughout the book’s general story, that of Lister’s career, his developing interest in microscopy, his suspicions about the miasma “bad air” theory of disease, and his eventual role as the founder of antiseptic medicine. If you like The Ghost Map by Steve Johnson, you will love this meticulously researched story by the incomparable Dr. Lindsay Fitzharris.
