Although Olive's Ocean is a Newbery Award winner, it is also a challenged book. I read the book "Olive's Ocean" for a school book report. Coming to grips with mortality and the implications of death are the focus of this eloquent book. All rights reserved. It's not a big book, it's sweet and simple. Some of the characters were a little crude and I felt that there should have been more of a connection to Olive throughout the book. I did like the end though. But best of all, Martha finds they share a secret ambition -- to be a writer. I didn't WANT to put it down and go to sleep last night, but had to finish it this morning. She and her family visits their granny Godbee, meets Jimmy Mannings and more.
This book made me so happy. Honest story about first crushes -- tweens and up.
She wasn't mean, but wrapped up in herself and her friends she had never reached out to Olive. Everything a middle grade book can be at its best. I cannot believe that this is a frequently challenged book.
But Martha had never gotten to know Olive. I have no words for this book because they will do it no justice. Martha sees parallels between herself and Olive, such as the desire to be a writer and being drawn to the ocean.

The story is told by a 12 year old girl named Martha Boyle. I think this book is a lighter read and I didn't have any trouble understanding anything. I really enjoyed this book, but the downside for young children is that there are bad role models and bad language. Olive's Ocean is a very creative novel and I would recommend reading this book if you like books about family and love. The sudden and tragic death of Olive, a classmate of Martha's, and a page from Olive's journal(that her mother delivers) are a catalyst for Martha to look at her own life through different eyes.
I really enjoyed the book, but I have some comments about it. I loved Godbee's suggestion that she and Martha each share something about themselves each day; she and Martha continue to get to know each other as they are now and to deepen their relationship. A tragic accident can sometimes bring you to see who you are and how you can be. Parents having sex is mentioned. Neither did anyone else at school except to tease. Grim, gripping end to the biggest saga in history. Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes was an excellent realistic fiction book. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. And this year Martha's routine at her beloved grandmother's beachside house is complicated by the Manning boys. There were so many strange coincidences between Martha and this girl she hardly knew.

One thing I liked about the book was the main character Martha, Kevin Henkes portrays her character really well. Kevin Henkes gives a glimpse into the adolescent psyche in "Olive's Ocean". She does not necessarily want to. Although Olive's Ocean is a Newbery Award winner, it is also a challenged book. One of Martha's classmates, a shy girl named Olive, is hit by a car and killed giving Martha a new perspective of her life.

I won't forget Martha and Godbee anytime soon. They could have been friends so Martha was upset (I would be too). The main characters of this young adult, realistic fiction story are Martha Boyle, Godbee. It was a nice conclusi. Martha has her first kiss. At times I thought it wa. What the possibilities are and impossible things can happen. The theme of this book was good but I really didn't like the language.
Olive's mom brings Martha a journal page of Olive saying"She is the nicest girl in my class."
