In the 1930s modern Belgian trawlers equipped with diesel engines began fishing around Cornwall and landing large quantities of fish to Newlyn harbour. Fishing has always been an integral part of Cornish heritage, but perhaps it was the humble pilchard that cemented fishing at the heart of the Cornish way of life back in the early 1700s.
Increasingly steam power was used for a variety of jobs at tin mines. From the 16th century, the village became inhabited, with fishing as the main occupation. Some of the St Ives vessels still fished off Plymouth, but that too had ceased to be viable fishery. Large quantities of ore were moved, mining areas having their entire appearance transformed by the sinking of shafts, the construction of engine houses and the disposal of millions of tons of waste material in surface pits. Currently, we represent over 160 member vessels, landing over 50 different species of fish and shellfish, collectively generating a first sale value of over £30 million every year. From 1829–38 the yearly average for this trade was 9,000 hogsheads. By 1847 40,883 hogsheads or 122 million fish were exported from Cornwall; the largest number ever taken in one seine net was 5,600 hogsheads at St Ives in 1868. Their principal catch was the pilchard but this was a late summer catch and the rest of the year they set long lines, and seine nets.
St Ives was a very busy fishing port and seining the usual method of fishing there. The most common type of gill nets used by cornish fishing boats are so called tangle nets - bottom set gill nets that have a large mesh size and are set loose so that passing fish are entangled rather than enmeshed.
